We decided to try something new and pick a theme for the next year: Building Men for Others. This theme is inspired by the book, “Season of Life: A Football Star, a Boy, a Journey to Manhood” by Jeffrey Marx. It’s the story of Joe Erhmann, who was a professional football player turned minister. The book follows a high school football team through a challenging season and highlights some inspiring principles of manhood that transcend the arena of football. Regardless of your interest in sports, Marx uses a combination of stories, conversations, and "chapels" to share Ehrmann's inspirational view of what it means to be a Man Built for Others. The definition of masculinity and the code of conduct described in this book will be used as the foundation for our journey together throughout the year.

We will continue on our journey of exploring the four tenets of the code of conduct found in the book, Season of Life. We will be discussing the second tenet, which is Lead Courageously. How do we lead with courage in our particular sphere of influence, and with our unique personality? Are we all called to be leaders? Is courage something we can learn, or something we are born with? We will be tackling all these questions as we look at different leadership styles, and how we can lead courageously within that. We will also be bringing in our manly team of chefs to grill us some more delicious carne asada, so make sure you mark your calendars!

We spent the night tackling the first of the four tenets of the code of conduct introduced in the book, Season of Life: Accept Responsibility. We wrestled through the question of what it looks like to take responsibility for our actions, words, and decisions. We split up into huddles and discussed how to accept responsibility for our Treasure (finances), Touch (Relationships), and Time/Talent. We continued our new tradition of great food with some delicious carne asada, grilled up by the same chefs as last time.
We spent the night talking through the concept of False Masculinity and giving an introduction to the book, "Season of Life," by Jeffrey Marx, which we will be using as the foundation for the theme of the next year. We discussed how the father figures in our lives and the influence of the culture around us has given us a false image of what masculinity looks like. We split up into huddles and tackled the influences of Ballfield, Bedroom, and Billfold. The highlight for most of the men, though, was the tri-tip and the fact that there was plenty to go around.
